Librem

Librem is a line of computers Manufactured by Purism, SPC featuring free (free) hardware and software. The laptop is designed to protect privacy and freedom by providing no-free (proprietary) software in the operating system or kernel, [1] [2] [3] [4] avoiding the Intel Active Management Technology , [5] and gradually freeing and securing firmware . [6] [7] Librem feature laptop hardware kill switches [8] [9] [10] for the microphone, webcam, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi , and can be purchased this air gapped.

Models manufactured

There are two production models, the Librem 13 (version 2) and Librem 15 (version 3). At the end of 2016, Purism announced [11] it would be preparing to move from a build to order production approach to a “ship from inventory” model with the new batches of Librem 13 and 15. A convertible tablet model, the Librem 11 It is planned [12] and available for preorder, but does not have an exact date as of April 2017. [13] In addition, Purism is planning a smartphone product which may be part of the Librem line.

Operating system

BIOS

In 2015, Purism began research to port the Librem 13 to coreboot [20] [21] [22] but the effort was stalled. By the end of the year, a coreboot developer completed an initial port of the Librem 13 and submitted it for review. [23] In December 2016, hardware enablement developer Youness Alaoui joined the author of the article. [24] As of early 2017, the porting efforts are ongoing. [25]
